We started the day early to avoid the tail end of the heat wave, after a shopping run to fill up on electrolytes we rolled out to start the day with some major climbing. Every stream was a swim spot, sometimes we only dipped our shirts in water through a fence. The landscape was rocky and dry after the first 20-40 miles of forest and farm. Ranchers were always kind to fill us up with ice water and tell us how many cows they had. By afternoon we reached a two building town called spotted horse, where the restaurant was closed, because it was Tuesday? We found A farm hand named Harris who told us about the show pigs and cows he was raising and filled up our waters. In the lingering days heat we rolled into Gilette and had amazing burritos the size of our arms. The campsite was a quiet park where we unwound and setup tarps for cowboy camping.
