Leadership Style

Mentorship

You will have the chance to become a role model and mentor for others at a critical point in their lives while leading bike trips. You may inspire your trekkers to pursue a passion, overcome negative emotions, or look at the world with new eyes. As you pass from town to town, you might do the same for your cashier, or someone you meet on the side of the road, showing them that risks are worth taking, and challenges are worth overcoming.

Embrace the Unexpected

We often say the adventure begins when everything goes wrong. Of course, we  make plans, follow routes, and set goals, but inevitably, the universe has different plans. Whether it’s a flat tire when you’re just a few miles away from camp, a road construction project that causes an unexpected detour, or an afternoon rainstorm that leaves you seeking indoor alternatives, stuff happens. But we often find it is the creative solutions and plan B’s that make for such memorable experiences. We love seeing leaders turn challenges to adventures, knowing the teens will follow the tone they set. We’ve seen leaders instigate rainy day mud fights, come up with roadside frisbee games while tires are being patched, take impromptu museum visits to escape bad weather. Learning to let go, embrace the unexpected, be quick to maneuver and find the silver lining is a valuable skill to have not only in leading bike trips, but in the surprising journey of life.

Adventure Enthusiast

Seeking out hidden swimming holes, spotting trendy hotspots in town, squeezing in a hiking venture to break up the day’s ride, having a spirit of adventure goes a long way on a Teen Treks trip. Fatigue will set in, but in those moments you know deep down that the best memories are made out in the world exploring. The group will feed off the energy of the group and as leaders, you are the pulse. At the end of each night, everyone will surrender to their pillow with a gratitude for rest and a satisfaction of a day well lived. A feeling that’s hard to capture without immersing head-first into adventure.

Equip Teens to Thrive

We take a hands-off approach to our leadership style. Every day, trekkers are distributed a “role of the day,” that leaves them in charge of navigation, cooking, cleaning, camp set-up, deciding the activity itinerary. Leaders oversee as trekkers practice being responsible within a group setting. Each night, groups will reflect on the highs and lows of the day and have trekkers self-identify ways in which they want to grow individually and as a group. This method of leadership enables teens to have the supervised freedom to explore skills, practice accountability and discover leadership skills.
