The bus drops us off in a hotel parking lot a stones throw from downtown Providence. We build our bikes in a few minutes and Zach, our other leader shows up. We open the box of camping gear and head out to our hotel–one of the tallest buildings in Providence–The Omni. After checking in we head up to the top floor (25) to drop off our gear and then meet our trekker Tristen. Immediately after seeing the awesome view from our rooms we leave to the World Cup watch party. At the park a massive screen plays the game which is commentated in Spanish. We quickly look for some lunch and decide to cross the street to the mall instead of waiting in long lines. Lunch is at Panera Bread–simple sandwiches and salads. We go over names, trip expectations, and the next few days. Then we head across town to a Trader Joe’s next to riverside park. While there, we talk about bike safety to the soundtrack of a one-man band. Eventually, we leave just before sunset and are shortly back at the Omni where we make a few sandwiches and snack above the lobby. We then head to bed before our busy day tomorrow.
