California Trekkers Reach Montara Lighthouse Hostel

Today was our first real day on the road! We headed through San Francisco, stopping to walk around the vibrant district of Castro. Next we made our way along the coast stopping briefly to get groceries and making our way to the first beach of the trip! We spent some time hanging out in the sand playing frisbee and hackey sack, preparing for the steepest climb of the day. The next 45 minutes was grueling as we made our way up the old Pedro mountain road. Through beautiful, lush forests we climbed 1000 feet in only a couple miles! We dealt with rocky roads, sandy stretches, and many bewildering bumps, but eventually we made it to the top! We would have had some incredible views but were sadly in the clouds for most of the peak. After a tough descent through similar terrain we emerged from the wilderness and quickly found our hostel. The Montara lighthouse offers spectacular views of the cliffs and ocean and provides a nice path down to beach area. We took a quick dip in the water to cool off after a long day, and enjoyed a wonderful dinner cooked by Beatrice, Holden, and Pradit. Looking forward to more biking tomorrow!
